Pocket Number 5: Inspire Bar, Christchurch Spire, New Union Street

wp_20161203_17_18_41_prowp_20161203_18_07_35_proInspire Bar is situated beneath Christchurch Spire, one of the signature three spires of Coventry’s skyline. Inside, on the vaulted walls hang a giant pair of Ravens wp_20161203_18_08_28_prodrawn by local artist Adie Blundell.

The bar offers a wide selection of specialist beer and ale, including from Coventry brewers Twisted Barrel and Byatt’s Brewery.

I asked at the bar counter for Mick or Martin and was told that Mick would arrive in a few minutes.

Brothers  Mick and Martin converted Christchurch Spire into Inspire Bar. The brothers are also the proprietors of Drapers Bar and recently opened Beer Gonzo, a specialist beer shop.

wp_20161203_17_48_19_proWhile I waited for Mick to arrive I drank a hoppy pint of Coventry Bitter and talked to a couple at the bar who told me that they had held their wedding reception at Inspire.

They were on their way to finish their night at Drapers Bar and said I would find Martin there.

No need: before I’d finished my pint, Mick arrived. I explained about what I was doing and he gave to the assemblage Inspire’s humorous drinks menu (in David Shrigley handwritten font) and then sent me – from one spire to another – to meet the Bishop or Dean of Coventry at Coventry Cathedral.
